I broke down and turned the heat back on this morning.

2) My wonderful husband cleaned up the pile of toys in our living room Friday night. It looks so much better now and I can feel my anxiety lift a bit.

3) I am looking forward to the boys being on spring break next week. It is a bit of a break for me too even though I have to work most of the week.

Here are the pictures for the week.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimnpC_hP63tfod2AFD8WthmZy-6PHy3nxMPrHtPWUXDUDfFZjaQ7uQhjh5JTlPKO5Qz8RsKokiUPTxYHSFdFo_wqhuLHTBt8iNJj8PdF3gqOnF7LDDrbLVsbH7Fuks2MurpiJXp-iPku83afLQKepa0q0OlWxfPt28q9Eqf5Uu1urYYAJRZWX8TQ/s4032/IMG_1004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; She was the only child of R. Thomas Scott, a West African scholar from Liverpool England, and Alma Long Scott, a classically trained pianist and music teacher. She moved to Harlem in 1924 with her mother and grandmother after her parents separated. By the age of 4 she could play the piano by ear and was called a child prodigy. At the age of 8 she was accepted to Juilliard and studied under Professor Paul Wagner. In 1933 her mother formed the Alma Long Scott's All-Girl Jazz band where Hazel played piano and trumpet.

By the age of 16 she was performing on the radio for Mutual Broadcasting System, at the Roseland Dance Hall and with the Count Basie Orchestra. From 1939-43 she was the leading attraction at the downtown and uptown branches of the Café Society, an integrated establishment. Hazel was very concerned about how African Americans were portrayed in popular culture. For this reason she turned down many "singing maid" roles in Hollywood films. When she did appear in films she insisted on having final cut priviledges, wearing her own clothes and jewelry and being billed as "Miss Hazel Scott as Herself." She appeared in 5 films in total - I Dood It (1943), Broadway Rhythm (1944), The Heat's On (1943), Something to Shout About (1943) and Rhapsody in Blue (1945). The Hazel Scott Show debuted on July 3, 1950 making her the first person of African descent to have their own TV show on American television. The show became very popular and eventually was on 3 times per week.

She was very active in the civil rights movement. She refused to play integrated venues. In 1949 she sued a restaurant in Pasco, Washington for refusing to serve her and her companion because they were black. Her victory in the lawsuit led to the Washington legislature passing the Public Accommodations Act in 1953. She voluntarily testified on September 22, 1950 in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee after her name appeared in Red Channels: A Report on Communist Influence in Radio and Television in June 1950. Her show was cancelled one week later and she ended up having a nervous breakdown in 1951. She ended up moving to Paris in 1957 and stayed until 1967. While there she appeared in the film Le desordre et la nuit in 1958. When she returned to the US she occasionally performed in nightclubs and also appeared on the soap opera One Life To Live in 1973.

In 1945 she married Baptist minister and US Congressman Adam Clayton Powell. Together they had one son, Adam Clayton Powel III. They divorced in 1960. She then married Swiss-Italian comedian Ezio Bedin in 1961. They divorced before she returned the United States. She died on October 2, 1981 at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. She was buried in Flushing Cemetery in Queens near jazz greats Louis Armstrong, Johnny Hodges and Dizzy Gillespie.

Today she is remembered for her unique swinging style and fusion of jazz and classical influences. Alicia Keys cited her as an inspiration for her performance at the 61st Grammy Awards. People rave about this book but I am having a hard time getting into it. It seems very repetitive to me in many ways. I will keep going though because I have found a few nuggets of wisdom to apply. I finished the Christmas in Maine series which ended pretty much how I expected. I also finished Murder on Liberty Bay by Dennis Shock. This was a fun and easy to read cozy mystery. I am now reading Straight Shooter: A Memoir of Second Chances and First Takes by Stephen A. Smith. I enjoy watching Stephen A. on ESPN so I am enjoying learning about how he ended up where he is.
Crazy Knitting Foolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694664336681979128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14147662.post-83095307057701186692024-03-05T16:27:00.003-05:002024-03-05T16:28:11.838-05:00True Life Tuesday: Florence B. Herr parents were George Peter and Barbara nee Memmert Seibert. When she was 3 years old she contracted polio which caused her to walk with a limp for the rest of her life. As a teenager she read biographies of famous scientists which lead to her love of science.

In 1918 she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Goucher College. She then earned her PhD in biochemistry from Yale University in 1923. After graduating she worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Otho S.A. Sprague Memorial Institute at the University of Chicago. Her work at removing contamination during the distillation process was adopted by the FDA, National Institute of Health and many pharmaceutical companies. While at the University of Chicago she was an instructor of pathology from 1924-1928 and was made an assistant professor in biochemistry in 1928.

While at the University of Chicago she met Esmond R. Long, MD who was working on tuberculosis research. 1n 1932 she and long relocated to the University of Pennsylvania where she became an assistant professor in biochemistry. This is where they decided to try and find a more reliable test for TB diagnosis. Florence was able to identify the active agent TB as a protein and was able to create a reliable test based upon this discovery. She first published this discovery in 1934 and her test became the national and international standard in the 1940's. She received the first Achievement Award from the American Association of University Women in 1943.

Florence retired as a professor emeritus from the University of Pennsylvania in 1959. She then moved to St Petersburg, Florida where she continued her work. She did research on the link between bacteria and certain types of cancer at Mound Park Hospital and and the Bay Pines VA Research Center. She continued publishing research until 1977. She also published her autobiography, Pebbles on the Hill of a Scientist in 1968. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1990. Florence passed away in a St Petersburg nursing home on August 23. 1991. After her death a historical marker was placed in front of her birth place on November 15, 1993.

Crazy Knitting Foolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694664336681979128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14147662.post-30292208205750159162024-03-04T15:36:00.003-05:002024-03-04T15:36:16.993-05:00Monday Musings
It is hard to believe that this is the first Monday of March. Here is what is currently on my mind.

1) It is 70 degrees and sunny today. It is not going to last but I will enjoy it while I can.

2) I feel like the amount of toys in the house is out of control. We really need to par down on the ones Preston no longer plays with.

3) I have decided to lighten up on myself with the habit tracking and I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

Crazy Knitting Foolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694664336681979128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14147662.post-32542451136826548052024-02-27T15:48:00.001-05:002024-02-27T15:50:20.773-05:00True Life Tuesday: Ralph E. His father was a veteran of the 43rd Colored Infantry Regiment of the Civil War. He was also a school teacher and minister of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

In 1900 Ralph graduated from Howard High School, a respected preparatory school for African Americans in Wilmington, Delaware. He briefly studied botany at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1904 he published a short paper in Forest Leaves, the official journal of the Pennsylvania Forestry Association. He also became the protégé of the Pennsylvania Forestry Commissioner Joseph Trimble Rothrock. In 1903 he enrolled in the Pennsylvania Forest Academy (now Pennsylvania State University Mont Alto campus) which was 1 of only 3 forestry school in the US at the time. He was second in his 1906 graduating class and became the first academically trained black forester in the country.

After graduating in 1906 he worked as the supervisor of the Pennsylvania state forest's seed nursery. He presented 2 papers at the first state forester's convention in 1908. While employed by the state he faced a lot of racism from the white employees he managed. In 1911 he left the state's service to create his own business. He moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1918 where he ran a nursery business until 1928. In 1928 he was hired by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. as a gardener for the Paul Lawrence Dunbar apartments in Harlem. He also worked as a supervisor of the Radio City Gardens at Rockefeller Center and Riverside Park in Manhattan. From 1944-1945 he worked part time as an assistant gardener at the Harlem River Houses, a public housing development.

Ralph ended up retiring in 1957 due to his failing health. He died on December 9, 1959 in Lawnside, New Jersey. He was survived by his wife, Pauline, who he married in 1908 and their son, Russell. He was buried in Chestnut Grove Cemetery outside of West Chester, Pennsylvania. In the mid-2000's the State Museum of Pennsylvania installed an exhibit on his career. He also has several dedications in his honor on the campus of his alma mater.
Crazy Knitting Foolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694664336681979128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14147662.post-66862474572185330412024-02-26T19:02:00.006-05:002024-02-26T19:02:34.847-05:00Monday Musings
As hard as it is to believe today is the last Monday of February. His parents were Horace and Elizabeth. Horace was able to buy his freedom with the profits he made by running a stable after his owner died. In 1862 the family moved to Washington, D.C. While there Inman attended the school of George F.T. Cook. He eventually attended Howard University. He worked in several different positions at the school to pay for his education. In 1873 he and his friend George W. Milford became the first two black students at Brown University. He dealt with a lot of racism however he managed to win over his classmates by winning an oratorical contest. He ended up becoming the class orator by the end of his senior year. In 1878 he married Zelia Bell and they ended up having 3 children - Zelia, Mary and Inman, Jr.

After graduating from Brown he began teaching at Natchez Seminary in Natchez, Mississippi. In 1878 he moved his family to Jefferson City, Missouri where he was a teacher at Lincoln Institute. In 1880 he was promoted to the position of president. In his first year he grew enrollment from 97 students to 153. In 1883 he was elected president of the Missouri State Teachers Association and was reelected to several terms. In 1898 be became president of Colored Agricultural and Normal University (now Langston University) in Langston, Oklahoma. He stayed in this position for many years. From 1916-1918 he was president of Colored Baptist College (now Western Baptist Bible College) in Macon, Missouri. He then went to be president of Roger Williams University in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1920 he moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where he was principal of the black elementary school and eventually of Douglass High School. He retired from the Oklahoma City school district in June 1935 with the title of principal emeritus.

He died of natural causes in his daughter's home on December 21, 1935. He was buried on the campus of Langston University. The tract where he was buried was renamed Page Memorial Park. He has several buildings named after him in Oklahoma, Lincoln University and Brown University.

Crazy Knitting Foolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694664336681979128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14147662.post-25765115927630478512024-02-19T18:48:00.004-05:002024-02-19T18:48:54.494-05:00Monday Musings
Another week is upon us and this is what is currently on my mind.

1) My last class of my Masters program ends on Wednesday. He was born a slave and it is unclear exactly how he became free. Some accounts state that he made his way to Massachusetts through the Underground Railroad where he met his father.

In March 1863 he joined the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to the rank of Sargent for heroism in the Battle of Fort Wagner on July 18, 1863. After being wounded in battle he grabbed the American flag and carried it forward. When he returned to his battle line he stated that he did his duty and did not let the flag hit the ground. He was honorably discharged due to the injuries he received in the battle in June 1894.

After his discharge he moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts where he delivered mail for 32 years. While there he married Susannah Williams and they had a daughter, Clara. He was awarded the Medal of Honor on May 23, 1900 - almost 37 years after the events at Fort Wagner. In 1901 a song about his action was published called "Boys the Old Flag Never Touched the Ground".

William died on December 9, 1908 in Boston from injuries he received in an elevator accident at the Massachusetts State House Building where he was working at the time. His body laid in repose for one day at the request of his wife and daughter and he was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in New Bedford. His New Bedford home is on the National Register of Historic Places. He also has a statue in his honor in the West Point Cemetery in Norfolk.

Crazy Knitting Foolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694664336681979128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14147662.post-2304829424295685172024-02-12T19:18:00.006-05:002024-02-12T19:18:47.632-05:00Monday Musings
Another week has begun and this is what is currently on my mind.

1) Last week was really bad for me mentally and emotionally. With Sunday bein the Super Bowl it seemed fitting to highlight Doug Williams.

Doug Williams was born on August 9, 1955 in Zachary, Louisiana. He attended the HBCU Grambline State University where he had a 36-7 record in 4 years as quarterback. He was twice named the Black College Player of the Year and was 4th in the Heisman voting in 1977. Despite his success in college only one NFL coach visited with him before the draft - Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Joe Gibbs. Gibbs and Williams spent 2 days together and after that Gibbs stated the he believed that Williams was the best quarterback in the draft. In 1978 the Buccaneers drafter him number 17 overall making him the first black quarterback drafted in the 1st round.

In his 5 seasons in Tampa Bay he took the team from league laughing stock to the playoffs in 3 seasons. However, it was not easy for him and he dealt with racism from fans, opposing players and even one of his own coaches. He was also very underpaid. He was paid $120,000 per year which was the least among all starting QBs and also less than 12 backups. In 1982 when his contract was up he asked for $600,000 but owner Hugh Culverhouse refused against the wishes on John McKay.

After his contract with Tampa ended he sat out the 1983 season. In 1984 and 1985 he played for the Oklahoma Outlaws/Arizona Wranglers of the USFL The USFL was shut down in 1986 and Doug then joined the Washington Redskins playing for his former Tampa Bay coach Joe Gibbs. He was a backup to Jay Schroeder but he did very well when he was on the field. He was named the starter for the playoffs in 1987. He led the team to Super Bowl XXII where they beat the Denver Broncos 42-10. He was the first black quarterback to start a Super Bowl and be named the game MVP. The next season he was often injured and ended up being replaced by Mark Rypien. He was waived by the Redskins in 1990 and was unable to find another team to take him on which led to him retiring.

After his career he became a football analyst for BET. However, he really wanted to become a coach. He started coaching at the HS level in Louisiana in 1991. In 1994 he was named the running backs coach at the US Naval Academy. He was named head coach of Morehouse College in 1997. Finally, he took over for legendary coach Eddie Robinson at his alma mater Grambling State University in 1998. he has also worked as an executive for many NF.

In 2009 he co-founded the Black College Hall of Fame along with fellow HCBU alumnus James Harris. In 2019 Grambling State University named a street on campus after him. He is currently working for the now Washington Commanders.

Crazy Knitting Foolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694664336681979128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14147662.post-9172990054561682502024-02-05T16:45:00.002-05:002024-02-05T16:45:31.721-05:00Monday Musings
Here we are at the first Monday of February. Being attacked in your home in the middle of the night is terrifying.

The murders of the Miyazawa family occurred between 11:30pm on December 30, 2000 and 12:05am on December 31, 2000. The incident took place in the Kamisoshigaya neighborhood of Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan. The victims were Mikio and Yasuko Miyazawa and their daughter, Niina, and son, Rei. The killer entered the home by climbing a tree and removing the screen from a 2nd floor window. He then strangled Rei with his hands. Mikio heard the disturbance and entered his son's room to see what was happening. The killer then stabbed him before moving on the stab Yasuko and Niina. The bodies were discover by Yasuko's mother, Haruko, at 10:40am on December 31.

During the investigation the police determined that the murderer stayed in the home for 2-10 hours after committing the murders. He used the family's computer. helped himself to food and drinks, used the bathroom, treated his injuries and took a nap on the couch. Drawers and papers were ransacked with some of them being place in the tub and toilet. The killer did take some money but there was some left behind. He also left 10 items on the couch including a knife, bag and some clothing.

There were some very specific clues found but a perpetrator was never identified and the murders remain unsolved. The killer's fingerprints and DNA were located at the scene but there were no hits when they were run through the police database. The DNA analysis determined that the killer was male possibly of mixed race. His maternal DNA was of European descent and his paternal DNA was of East Asian descent.

This investigation is one of the largest ever undertaken in Japanese history. In 2019 there were still 35 officer assigned to the case. Also as of December 2021 there is a 20 million Yen reward for information that leads to the capture and conviction of the killer.
Crazy Knitting Foolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694664336681979128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14147662.post-42542713374569909672024-01-29T13:48:00.002-05:002024-01-29T13:48:12.241-05:00Monday Musings
I can hardly believe that today is the last Monday of January. Here is what I am currently thinking about.

1) Unfortunately our Lions did not win last night and will not going to the Super Bowl. They had a great season though and we can not really complain.

2) I am in a bit of a funk again. I need to have my blood sugar checked because I think they are high which is part of the problem but the cold and snow we have been dealing with are not helping either.

3) I took a mental health day today and I do feel a bit better so I am hoping this can help me get through the week.

Hanging out in bed watching You Tube,

Crazy Knitting Foolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694664336681979128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14147662.post-32806770041624524382024-01-26T14:17:00.003-05:002024-01-26T14:17:39.700-05:00Friday Funnies
I cannot believe this is the last weekend of January! I am still being a monogamous knitter and I am on the final coaster for the first set I am making,

Once this is completed I will need to figure out what to make next. I have a couple of ideas that I am milling around.

On the reading front I have started two new books. I am on the 6th and final installment of the Christmas in Maine series by Grace Myers. Still trying to get past the typos but I really want to know how the story ends so I am stick through it. On the self-improvement front I am reading Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. So many people swear by this book that I am a bit afraid that it won't live up to what I have decided it will be in my mind. I am trying to just stay open to what is has to say and not have any expectations.

Crazy Knitting Foolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694664336681979128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14147662.post-39917499834199164092024-01-23T20:03:00.002-05:002024-01-23T20:03:36.310-05:00True Life Tuesday: Prince Hall

While many parts of his life are not known what we do know about Prince Hall is very interesting.

It is believed that he was born between 1735 and 1738. The identities of his parents along with his birthplace are not known. At the age of 11 he was either enslaved or in the service of Boston tanner William Hall. By 1770 he was free man and he was also able to read and write. There were many men in the area with the name of Prince Hall so it is unclear if he was married and had children. He worked in Boston as a peddler, caterer and leather worker.

Prince was also active in the black community. He encourage blacks to fight in the revolution thinking that this would lead to the freedom for all black people. He also hosted many events in the community to improve the lives of blacks. He was drawn to the free mason movement due to their ideals of liberty, equality and peace. He and 14 other free black men petitioned to join the all-white Boston St. John's Lodge but they were denied. They ended up founding the African Lodge No. 1 and Prince became the Grand Master. However, their lodge had limited power and could not confer degrees or perform other essential functions.

Prince worked in the state political arena to end slavery, advance black rights and protect free blacks from being kidnapped by slave traders. He also started a school program in his home for free black children. He also wrote many petitions to have slavery outlawed in Massachusetts. Prince supported the return to Africa movement as well although he set the idea aside when he realized that there was little support for it.

Prince Hall died in 1807. He was buried in Copp's Hill Burying Ground along with many other notable Bostonians. A monument was placed next to his grave marker on June 24, 1835.

Crazy Knitting Foolhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694664336681979128noreply@blogger.com0
