This story takes place in Burari, Delhi, India. Eleven members of the Chundawat family committed mass suicide. The family lived in the Sant Nagr neighborhood for about 20 years. They also owned a grocery store and a plywood business. In 2007 the family patriarch, Bhopal Singh, died. After his death the youngest son, Lalit, became very introverted. He eventually told his family members that he was possessed by the spirit of his father.
On July 1, 2018 a neighbor, Gurcharan Singh, went to the house when Lalit failed to show for their morning walk. He also noticed that the family businesses were not yet open which was unusual. He found the front door open and when he entered the house he found 10 of the family members hanging. The 11th family member, the grandmother, was later found strangled in her bed. Singh ran to another neighbor's house and they called the police who arrived around 7:30am.
When the police arrived they found the 10 family member who were hanging were blindfolded, had cotton in their ears and their mouths taped shut. Some also had their hands and feet tied. When the autopsies were performed none of the family members showed signs of struggle. The police located 11 diaries that were all kept for 11 years. These diaries laid out the plans for the suicide and the bodies were found in the manner described in the diaries.
Lalit was believed to be the mastermind of the suicide. Psychologists who reviewed the case believed that he had a delusional disorder. The other family members then ended up with a "shared psychological disorder." However, some of the extended family members believe that this was a murder and not a suicide but no evidence was found to confirm this theory.
