True Life Tuesday: 1972 Iran Blizzard

When you think about where the world's deadliest blizzard took place I bet that Iran is not what comes to mind. However, in 1972 that is exactly where the worst winter storm in history occurred.

The blizzard happened from February 3-9. The storm dumped 25 feet of snow across northwester, central and southern parts of the country. The storm came after the area experienced 4 years of drought conditions. The weight of the snow an the wind broke trees, downed power lines and crushed cars. Temperatures also dropped down to -13 degrees Fahrenheit. Another issue the area was facing at the same time was a flu epidemic. Because of the snow food and medicine supplies were unable to get through while the existing supplies were exhausted.

It is believed that at least 4000 people died and 200 villages were buried. Some villages lost their entire populations and were permanently wiped out. It is also believed that an area the size of Wisconsin was buried under the snow for over a week.
