Advent Saturday #1

The commercialization of Christmas is something that has been bothering me for years. I want Clark to grow up knowing that there is more to the season than getting gifts. I decided that to help teach him this lesson this year we would do an Advent Calendar with fun activities that we we can do as a family. Some are simple and some are more in depth but they will all be fun (at least I hope).

Here is Clark pulling the activity on the first morning. The activity was to make hot chocolate. This one was sort of a bust because Clark had no interest in drinking his.

The activity for day #2 was to play a game together. We finally got out the Hungry Hungry Hippos game he got for his birthday. He kept taking his marbles out and putting them back in the center but it was fun anyway.

Today is day #3 and our activity was to buy and donate food to the needy. There was a canned food drive at a local shopping center today so we went to grocery store to buy some food and take it over. He was tired and crabby so I didn't get a picture of him putting the food in the truck but we donated it anyway and that is what really matters.

So I plan on posting our activities for the next 3 Saturdays up until Christmas Eve. Until next time ....

What a beautiful idea!! I love it. Maybe if enough of us push back against the commercialism of Christmas, the real spirit will shine through.

This is a great idea! I'm sure as Clark gets older, he will understand more and really get into it (maybe he'll even drink the hot chocolate). What a nice tradition to start.

What a great idea---he will get it more as he gets older. And the hot chocolate thing will come too! Sunshine's all about it whether it's at home or Starbuck's!
