June was another decent reading month for me. I completed three books but
two of them were very short. In the past month I finished:
1) Sous
Chef: 24 Hours on the Line by Michael Gibney - an interesting look inside
the kitchen of an upscale New York City restaurant. I really enjoy watching
cooking shows but they are a stylized version of a kitchen. This book shows the
ugliness of what happens behind the scenes but also the closeness the cooks and
staff end up developing.
2) My
Wish List by Gregoire Delacourt
- a very small book (more of a novella) of what happens to an ordinary French
housewife when she wins the lottery. I liked this book quite a bit. It makes
you think about what you would change in your life if you suddenly received
everything you ever wanted. The main character bothered me a bit with her indecisiveness
but I do feel that the author wrote her that way on purpose.
3) Empty
Mansions: The Mysterious Life of Huguette Clark and the Spending of a Great
American Fortune by Bill Dedman and Paul Clark Newell, Jr. - the life story
of the strange life of the daughter of one of America's richest men. This was
an interesting look at the life of a very strange woman. I think she may have
been diagnosed on the autism spectrum if she were a child today. Her story is
very sad and it is a shame that so many people were more interested in what she
could give them instead of what was best for her.
