True Life Tuesday: The 27 Club

This is a club that no one wants to join. This is the urban legend that states that there is an increased chance of a musician, actor or other artists dying at the age of 27.

The myth of the club is concentrated from 1969 to 1971. In that time period Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison all passed away. Most of the deaths in the club are the result of drugs and alcohol. However, it was Kurt Cobain's death in 1994 that led to the coining of the term 27 Club. The myth lost some steam afterwards but we revived with the death of Amy Winehouse in 2011. The first famous member of the club is believed to be musician Robert Johnson who died in 1938.

Other club members include Ron :Pigpen" McKernan of the Grateful Dead, Dave Alexander of The Stooges, actor Anton Yelchin, football player Aaron Hernandez, basketball player Reggie Lewis and pitcher Tyler Skaggs.

So is there any truth to the idea that an artist is at a higher risk of dying at the age of 27? In 2011 a study by the British Medical Journal was released. While they did find that artists had a higher risk of dying in their 20s and 30s than the normal population there was no correlation to the age of 27 specifically. Still, if you are famous you may want to be very careful on lay low until you turn 28.
