Project Spectrum 2011

After a year off Lolly has started up Project Spectrum once again. For those of you who may not know about PS it is a chance to view the world around you by concentrating on color. The 2011 version begins today and the first colors up are red and orange. Now PS is about more than knitting and I do have some plans in the works for other projects but today I decided to start off by pulling out a very old WIP.

This is my Alix's Prayer Shawl that I started in January 2010. I made a mistake and could never get the pattern to work out correctly after that. So today I ripped it out and started over. I will be using many lifelines this time to ensure that I finally finish it. Obviously it will not be done by the end of the month but I hope to make some real progress on it. Wish me luck. Until next time ....

Winning is Good

A while ago I entered a comment on Deb's blog to help her get to her 14,000th comment. Well little did I know that I was the 14,000th commenter and won her contest. I rarely win anything so I was pretty surprised. Last weekend her package arrived.

She is in the process of weeding out some of her books (take a look at her for sale items she has some great stuff) and forwarded some of them my way. They have been added to my to be read pile on my nightstand and can not wait to get started. Thanks Deb!

Next time I will kvetch to you all about my yarn (or lack there of) issues. I have learned my lesson the hard way. Until next time ....

3rd Annual Brigid in Cyberspace Poetry Reading

One from my childhood.

Peanut-Butter Sandwich by Shel Silverstein
from the book Where the Sidewalk Ends

I'll sing you a poem of a silly young king
Who played with the world at the end of a string,
But he only loved one single thing—
And that was just a peanut-butter sandwich.

His scepter and his royal gowns,
His regal throne and golden crowns
Were brown and sticky from the mounds
And drippings from each peanut-butter sandwich.

His subjects all were silly fools
For he had passed a royal rule
That all that they could learn in school
Was how to make a peanut-butter sandwich.

He would not eat his sovereign steak,
He scorned his soup and kingly cake,
And told his courtly cook to bake
An extra-sticky peanut-butter sandwich.

And then one day he took a bit
And started chewing with delight,
But found his mouth was stuck quite tight
From that last bite of peanut-butter sandwich.

His brother pulled, his sister pried,
The wizard pushed, his mother cried,
"My boy's committed suicide
From eating his last peanut-butter sandwich!"

The dentist came, and the royal doc.
The royal plumber banged and knocked,
But still those jaws stayed tightly locked.
Oh darn that sticky peanut-butter sandwich!

The carpenter, he tried with pliers,
The telephone man tried with wires,
The firemen, they tried with fire,
But couldn't melt that peanut-butter sandwich.

With ropes and pulleys, drills and coil,
With steam and lubricating oil—
For twenty years of tears and toil—
They fought that awful peanut-butter sandwich.

Then all his royal subjects came.
They hooked his jaws with grapplin' chains
And pulled both ways with might and main
Against that stubborn peanut-butter sandwich.

Each man and woman, girl and boy
Put down their ploughs and pots and toys
And pulled until kerack! Oh, joy—
They broke right through that peanut-butter sandwhich

A puff of dust, a screech, a squeak—
The king's jaw opened with a creak.
And then in voice so faint and weak—
The first words that they heard him speak
Were, "How about a peanut-butter sandwich?"

Knitterpalooza

What a great time it was. Amby and Kristi put on a great party. Here is the whole gaggle of knitters, photo take courtesy of Kristi's husband.

I was a very good girl and did not go crazy at the yarn stores.

I bought some Classic Elite Skye Tweed and size 13 DPNs to make the Felted Triangular bag from the Knitting Pattern a Day Calender (Sept 4th entry). I also bought some size 3 circulars to make my Bombshell and a skein of Louet Gems in Grape. I also went to Michael's afterwards to use the 25% coupon I was gifted with by one of my knitting girls, Kimlien. I got some findings and beads to make jewelry and two balls of Vanna's Choice in Brick to make a scarf for the Red Scarf Project.

I finished hubby's hat at knitting on Wednesday but I have not been able to block it yet. He did try it on and approved highly. I guess I should block it for him since he took me out for a yummy breakfast this morning. Although I was bummed that they do not have their pumpkin pancakes yet. Oh well I guess we will have to go back next month when they are finally available. Until next time ....

Drive By Blogging

Just a quick update.

1) I am still working my way through Ravelry. I am having so much fun looking at other people's projects that I have not uploaded most of my own! I did get my 3 current WIPS (Icarus, Yarn Harlot's Basic Sock Recipe and His Hat) in but nothing older. I think I need a plan of attack but I am to tired to come up with one.
2) I did not get to work on my Ravelry account because I had a busy weekend. MSU football on Saturday afternoon, 50th anniversary party for my aunt and uncle that evening and another party with my family on Sunday. It was nice to see my aunts, uncles and cousins who I do not get to see very often.
3) Yesterday was spent recovering from the weekend. I ate really badly and got totally off schedule with my meals so I felt like crap all day. I still have a slight headache and feel crabby but I hope all the bad stuff is processing through my system.
4) This upcoming weekend is going to be crazy also. I have another MSU football game Saturday at noon, the Rocky Horror Show Saturday night and Stitch and Pitch on Sunday afternoon. I am tired thinking about it already!
5) If you are in the area and free on the 15th please come to Knitterpalooza. This is going to be so much fun. There will be a yarn crawl, prizes and BBQ. Check out Amby's blog for details.

Until next time ....

The Yarn Harlot and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Our poor Harlot! She had a horrible day on Sunday. I'm sure at some point during the day she was hoping this was some huge April Fool's joke. That is what everyone in the library's multi purpose room was hoping. However, everyone remained in good spirits and a lot of knitting was done. It was also nice to see people in real life whose blogs I read everyday.

Some of us took advantage of the delayed arrival to do some stash enhancement. We headed to Busy Hands a few blocks away and overwhelmed the small store.

I bought this beautiful Reynolds Top Seed Cotton in chocolate brown. This will become a Fake-A-Gamo some day. Maybe during the brown PS months of August and September.

The Harlot made her entrance by running into the room at top speed. All she said was crap which after the day she had I think is pretty good. Here she is getting ready to take the famous sock with the crowd shot. She was funny and wonderful and I wished she would have talked longer than she did. If you get the chance to go to one of her talks jump at the chance it is so worth it.

After her talk she was wonderful and talked to every person there. She is very funny and so sweet. She is also so small! I was a little psyched that she knew my blog when she saw my name tag. I tried not to embarrass myself and I think I did ok.

I told Tina and Miranda that I was putting their picture on my blog if they dragged their chairs across the room, up the stage and in front of the Harlot so I am keeping my promise.

All in all is was a great (but LONG) day. Until next time ....

Silent Poetry Reading

I could not choose just one poem for the Silent Poetry Reading so here are my two favorite poems.

Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
