WIP on Wednesday: Gerri Hat

This WIP will soon be a FO since I am on the crown decreases for the hat. This is the Gerri Hat by Marly Bird. I am knitting this out of some Lion Brand Wool-Ease from my stash. This will be going to the Operation Chemo Comfort KAL with the Dramatic Knits podcast group.

I am really enjoying this pattern. It has enough spice to keep your attention but is fairly easy to memorize. My biggest complaint is the yarn. This ball is one huge tangle and I have had to cut the yarn twice because I could not untangle it.

Another project that will hopefully bring a smile to the face of someone going through a very rough time. Until next time ....

WIP on Wednesday: Cable Twist Hat

While listening to the most recent episode of the Dramatic Knits podcast Steve and Callie were discussing their most recent KAL. They are collecting hat for Operation Chemo Comfort.  Now I love knitting hats and I also love knitting for charity. Plus my mom passed away from cancer so this is right up my alley.

I searched my Ravelry library for pretty simple patterns that I could knit up quickly. One that caught my eye was the Cable Twist Hat by Breann Elyse Miller. So last week I grabbed some Wool-Ease I had in my stash and cast on.

I am really enjoying this pattern. The cable pattern was easy to memorize and now it is the easy stockinette section. I really hope that I can finish this one along with another hat before the KAL ends. Until next time ...

WIP on Wednesday: Giants Bankhead Hat

As you may have noticed I love football. This means that I have to participate in the Down Cellar Studio Pigskin Party KAL. Basically this is a KAL the runs from the kickoff of the NFL season through the Super Bowl. You earn points based upon the number of yards you knit and using sponsor products. There are also interceptions where you can earn bonus points. The first interception is to make something to wear using team colors.

I had some yarn leftover from Clark's Spider-man hat that happens to match the colors of the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. Since I cannot stand the Patriots I am calling this my Giants Bankhead Hat.

Once this is finished it will be added to my pile of charity knits. If you decide to jon in the KAL let me know. You can also earn bonus by drafting new members. Until next time ....

Pattern: Cozy by Alison Williams
Needles: size 8 (5.0MM) for the body and 10.5 (6.5MM) for edging
Yarn: Red Heart Team Spirit in Red/Blue

Comments: I have made this pattern before and it is very easy to follow. Now I just need to get the little guy to wear it!

FO: Swirl Hat

I am still plugging along on my commitment to knit 8 hats for Halos of Hope. I completed hat #6 - the Swirl Hat by Mandie Harrington.

I really enjoy this pattern. I made the preemie version last year for the Remembering Remy KAL. It is easy to memorize but interesting enough to not be boring. The yarn is some very old stash that I bought in 2005 or 2006 when I began knitting. It is di.Ve Teseo which is 53% Wool 47% Microfiber and is pretty nice to work with. Now I have two more hats to go and they can be mailed off to warm the heads of some cancer patients. Until next time ....

FO: Green Cuddly Cap

After finishing my Leethal Mary Janes I had quite a bit of yarn left over. I decided to go through my queue and see if there was anything I could knit to use it up. I came across the Cuddly Chemo Cap pattern which I have knit before. This was the perfect pattern and used up the rest of the yarn like I wanted. So here is the Green Cuddly Cap.

This yarn is very soft and it will feel nice on the head of someone going through chemo treatments. Here is my favorite model being very silly with the hat.

Until next time ....

Ravellenics 2014

I did not make my goal of 8 hats for Ravellenics but I did finish 4. My main goal in this process was to try and find my knitting mojo again and that seems to have been successful. Since my last update I completed:

Cuddly Chemo Cap

Saint Anthony Cable Hat

Horizontal Rib Hat

Now I just need to get them in the mail so Halos of Hope can get them to the people who need them. Until next time ....

I May Have Overestimated

I may have overestimated the number of hats that I can finish during Ravellenics. On Wednesday I finished my first hat.

The pattern is Barley by TinCanKnits and the yarn is Lion Brand Pound of Love in Bubble Gum. I really enjoyed the pattern and can see making more in the future.

I have cast on for my second hat - Horizontal Rib from the Sock Yarn One-Skein Wonders book. I am on the last pattern repeat before the decreases so I should be able to finish it this weekend. That means that I will need to knit 6 hats in a week. Somehow I do not see this happening but I will give it the old college try. Until next time ....

It's Ravellenics Time!

I have been thinking about what I want to do for my Ravellenic project this year. My knitting mojo is almost non existent these days so it has been difficult to figure out. While listening to podcasts one day at work the perfect idea came to me. There is a drive to collect hats for Halos of Hope – a charity that gives hats to cancer patients going through chemo. The Knotty Girls podcast put out a throwdown to other podcasters to see which show’s listeners could send in the most hats by the end of Stitches West. Many podcasts have take up the torch and are encouraging their listeners to send in their hats.

I have decided that I want to knit 8 hats for Halos of Hope as my Ravellenic project. This idea comes from a special place in my heart. On February 12th it will be the 14th anniversary of my mom’s death. My mom loved the Olympics and we always watched the games together. She actually passed away during the 2002 Salt Lake games. My mom had cancer and lost her hair during chemo so I thought knitting these hats up would be a good way to have her with me while I watch the games.

Since I am not joining any of the official groups for prizes my Barley hat that is currently on the needles will be hat #1 for my challenge. Since Stitches ends the same day as the Olympics I will try to mail the hats that are finished to the yarn store that is collecting the hats for the podcaster throwdown on Wednesday or Thursday before the end of the games and them I will mail the rest to Halos directly. I am actually looking forward to this so maybe my mojo will return! Until next time ….

FO: Todd's Man Thing

I had a difficult time trying to figure out what I could make for my brother. He does not really have many hobbies and is a difficult person to please. Then I figured we live in Michigan and it gets cold here (it was 18 degrees today). He has a driveway that he needs to shovel so a warm hat would work. I searched my queue and decided that Man Thing was a winner.

The yarn is Wool Ease in Oxford Grey. I really enjoy this yarn and think it is a good workhorse at a great price. He seems to enjoy it along with the spicy roasted pistachios I made him.

Until next time ....

FO: Clark's Christmas Hat

My kid has quite a large head. He has been in the 98th percentile for head circumference since birth. I like to think this is because he has such a big brain. However, this can cause an issue with finding hats that fit his large noggin. Most hats do not cover his ears and that is pretty much pointless. So this mama took things into her own hands and knit him a hat for Christmas.

The pattern is Cozy by Alison Williams and it was wonderful. You knit the flaps first and the join everything in the round which I really liked. I used the left over Patons Kroy from his socks but I did run out right at the start of the decreases so I used some black Patons Classic Wool in my stash. I actually like how it looks like it was deliberate. I also used the black yarn to knit the i-cord edging. The pattern calls for a single crochet border but since I do not crochet I did the i-cord instead. I hope he enjoys it. Until next time ....
